# 2026 Energy Affordability Candidate Pledge

### The 2026 midterm elections are critical – they will change the course for climate policy at the federal level. Competitive races are happening all over the U.S. And amid a global energy crisis, voters everywhere are asking: **“_How will I afford my bills?_”**

Big Tech’s data center boom is driving up energy demand and even expanding fossil fuel energy use. Wars and international conflict are driving up the cost of oil. Everyday people are paying the price as energy bills sky-rocket and climate pollution soars.

At the same time, our energy infrastructure is failing in the face of climate change-fueled heatwaves and storms. Blackouts in places including Detroit, Memphis, and Gary, Indiana, have left hundreds of thousands of people sitting in the dark for hours, days and even weeks.

These colliding crises are making energy affordability one of the biggest issues in the midterm elections.

## The Candidates

350 Action launched the 2026 Energy Affordability Pledge to ask midterm candidates of all parties directly about their commitment to making policy decisions that will reduce household energy costs and also create pathways towards renewable infrastructure.

## The Pledge

**If elected, the above list of candidates have pledged to:**

- Support a pause on data centers that threaten our land, water and climate and push up energy bills. Work to put in place transparent democratic guardrails for data center expansion, including requirements to run on 24/7, new and additional renewable power that is shared with surrounding communities at no cost.
- Protect households from being disconnected or priced out of essential electricity access during the hottest and coldest months of the year.
- Fight to bring constituents the cheapest and healthiest sources of electricity now available – such as solar and wind – while phasing out old, expensive and polluting technologies like gas and coal.
- Give families and small businesses the power to produce their own electricity from the sun for free, by expanding access to rooftop and balcony solar, community solar gardens and virtual power plants.
- Support a windfall tax on the excess profits of oil, gas and AI companies to help energy-stressed families and make affordable renewable energy available to all.
