350 Action on Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio signing the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge

New York, NY — Today, Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio announced his signing of the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, making him the seventeenth out of 23 major Democratic Presidential candidates to do so.

On this latest commitment, Thanu Yakupitiyage, 350 Action spokesperson, issued the following statement:

“Bill de Blasio becoming the seventeenth candidate to sign the no fossil fuel money pledge is a clear testament to people power against the delay and deceit of fossil fuel billionaires. From lawsuits to make polluters like Exxon pay for climate damages, to opposing the Williams fracked gas pipeline and divesting from fossil fuel companies, de Blasio recognizes the urgency of the moment we’re in. Action on the climate crisis is already a top voter issue in the 2020 election, and hundreds of thousands of people are demanding the DNC hold a climate debate. We deserve to learn exactly how the next U.S. President will take action at scale with the climate crisis on Day One.”

Last week, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez said the party will not host an official primary debate on the climate crisis, and will restrict candidates from participating in third-party climate debates.

Tomorrow, activists will gather in front of the DNC headquarters in Washington, DC, to demand the party reverse its stance and provide a forum for presidential hopefuls to debate one of the greatest threats facing humanity today. A broad coalition of progressive groups will be delivering more than 200,000 petition signatures from people across the country in support of a climate debate.
