Brooklyn, NY — Today, Senator Sanders and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez announced their “Public Housing Green New Deal Act,” designed to modernize and improve public housing in the United States as part of the Green New Deal. The act seeks to rehabilitate housing in disrepair, and upgrade existing public housing, while transitioning all of public housing in the United States to highly energy-efficient homes.

Natalie Mebane, Associate Director of Policy at 350 Action said,

“The “Public Housing Green New Deal Act” is exactly the kind of legislation we need to combat both the climate crisis and economic injustice. Communities living in America’s under-resourced public housing deserve to be centered in our just transition to renewable energy. By investing in energy efficiency upgrades in America’s public housing units, we will save energy, reduce carbon pollution and help to create more sustainable homes.

We should strive as a nation to make all of our homes zero carbon and this bill is an important first step. It is time to transition off of fossil fuels and put millions to work doing so. We are proud to support the “Public Housing Green New Deal Act” and look forward to seeing more legislation like it, that makes the goals of the Green New Deal a reality.”
