Activists Call on Candidates to Address the Climate Crisis, Demand a Green New Deal and Phase Out of Fossil Fuels

(Miami, FL) Today as presidential candidates prepare for the first Democratic Debate of the 2020 Season in Miami, wildfires are ravaging tens of thousands of acres of the Everglades, forcing some residents of Southwest, Florida to spend the night in shelters. The daily reality of the climate crisis is stark in Florida, from devastating climate-altered hurricane seasons to sea level rise and increased flooding. In response, Floridians are calling on our next President to not just take climate seriously, but to act bolding and urgently to address the climate crisis on day one. 

Last night as candidates prepared for the debate, a group of activists from 350 South Florida, Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion took to the streets to project devastating images of flooding and hurricanes on iconic Miami buildings like the Freedom Tower, and to demand a Green New Deal.

For cities like Miami who are staring down a future of immense damage to their homes, health and economy, the crisis is now. If presidential candidates are coming to Miami to ask for people’s votes, they need to address people’s most critical needs: a Green New Deal that can swiftly transition  our energy system, support the most impacted communities recover and thrive, and create millions of good jobs in a 100% renewable economy.”
